The end of Roman Abramovich's tenure should be a good thing for Chelsea managers' longevity.
No English club has won more than the 21 trophies collected over the Russian's 19-year tenure, but 13 different managers, two of whom returned for the second time, have rarely enjoyed enduring comfort on the Stamford Bridge bench.
Thomas Tuchel knew what he was getting into when he succeeded Frank Lampard in January 2021.
Or at least he thought he knew. Many of his predecessors (including Lampard) talked about building a dynasty, but Tuchel welcomed the capricious nature of the work he undertook. He was grateful for an elite infrastructure built to win and wanted to make the most of it.
Some were concerned about the gap created by Abramovich's distance as owner, but Tuchel enjoyed the freedom to work and coach the team for as long as he saw fit, without outside interference or internal politics. The 47-year-old's previous job came at Paris Saint-Germain, where many managers have reflected that the same cannot apply to the Ligue 1 club.
At Chelsea, Tuchel was 'head coach', not 'manager' and despite the subtle , but the clear distinction implied by the different titles was fine with him.
And so it was ultimately the change that brought it to Tuchel. at Chelsea, a change that began with the club finding themselves in unprecedented circumstances as a U. K-Government sanctions related to Abramovich's alleged ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin restricted the club's day-to-day activities.
Things changed again when the consortium, led by Los Angeles Dodgers co-owner Todd Boehly, and Clearlake Capital finally completed their £2.5billion acquisition in May.
Tuchel was asked to take more responsibility for the transfer strategy in , to engage in regular dialogue with the new owners, to consider external input and to change his ideas. This change created tensions that ultimately led to the German being fired this week.
It also explains why Boehly and Clearlake chose Graham Potter to replace him.
